BIO2120 – Evolutionary Biology
Course description
Course content
The course presents modern evolutionary science, the origin of life and its evolution. Central themes are: species concepts, speciation, population genetics, quantitative genetics, pattern and process in micro- and macro-evolution, molecular evolution and aquatic ecology.
Learning outcome
To provide the students with a solid knowledge of different research methods and results in contemporary evolutionary science. The students will be trained in evaluating different types of scientific evidence, and make presentations verbally and in writing.

Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
In addition to fulfilling the , applicants have to meet the following special admission requirements:

Mathematics R1 (or Mathematics S1 and S2) + R2
And in addition one of these:
- Physics (1+2)
- Chemistry (1+2)
- Biology (1+2)
- Information technology (1+2)
- Geosciences (1+2)
- Technology and theories of research (1+2)

Recommended previous knowledge
Prior background in Biology is an advantage.

Teaching
Lectures, essay-writing, solving questions in seminars, computer-excercises and other excercises. The computer lab with assignments is obligatory.
This course uses Canvas. But before the start of the semester, information will be given through the semester page.
Examination
1 essay (counts 30%). In addition to the essay a form with your signature to prevent plagiarism/cheating has to be delivered. Read more about what qualifies as cheating here. The essay is to be submitted in Canvas. The controllprogram is installed, and run for every essay.
Written exam (3 hours) at the end of the semester (counts 70%).
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about .
