Bio: Alexander Refsum Jensenius, BA, MA, MSc, PhD [he/him] is a music researcher and research musician. He is Professor of music technology at the University of 探花精选, where he is also Director of RITMO Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies in Rhythm, Time and Motion and the . He is now also in the process of establishing , a large consortium comprising 100+ researchers across Norway in collaboration with both public and private institutions.

Prof. Jensenius was named after researching the music-related body motion of musicians, dancers, and perceivers. More recently, he was named because of his interest in human micromotion and his year-long project of . Now, he explores the musical properties of indoor environments and how it is possible to improve ventilation systems. This is based on triangulating theories and methods from musicology, psychology, and technology, and ensuring that all his projects have both scientific and artistic outcomes.

His research has been presented at all the major music technology and psychology conferences, and he is widely published, including the monograph Sound Actions and the and anthologies. He has been named and has been experimenting with new educational approaches through the online courses , , and .

Before all of this, he received a multi-disciplinary bachelor鈥檚 degree in music and mathematics and a master鈥檚 in musicology from the University of 探花精选. He then completed a master鈥檚 in applied information technology at the Chalmers University of Technology before pursuing a PhD in music technology at the University of 探花精选. He has been a visiting researcher at UC Berkeley (), McGill University (), and KTH (). He was Head of the (2013-2016), led the Steering Committee of the (2011-2022), and was a member of the (2017-2024).

This edited volume is based on a selection of contributions at an international seminar organized in May 2022 to celebrate the achievements of Professor God酶y upon his retirement from the University of 探花精选. The 17 chapters cover different approaches to sonic design practice and theory, giving readers historical backdrops and an overview of the current state of both artistic and scientific research in the field.

Sound Actions: Conceptualizing Musical Instruments (MIT Press, 2022)

What is a musical instrument? How do new technologies change how we perform and perceive music? What happens when composers build instruments, performers write code, perceivers become producers, and instruments play themselves? The answers to these pivotal questions entail a meeting point between interactive music technology and embodied music cognition, what author Alexander Refsum Jensenius calls 鈥渆mbodied music technology.鈥 Moving between objective description and subjective narrative of his own musical experiences, Jensenius explores why music makes people move, how the human body can be used in musical interaction, and how new technologies allow for active musical experiences. The development of new music technologies, he demonstrates, has fundamentally changed how music is performed and perceived.

This online course from the University of 探花精选 is for everyone interested in human motion capture. You鈥檒l start by learning the basics of human anatomy and biomechanics. Then we鈥檒l move on to setting up, calibrating, and recording with an infrared optical motion capture system. Some other sensing technologies will also be presented, including accelerometers, muscle sensors, and video recordings. Examples will be given of how such systems are used in various types of music research. Finally, you鈥檒l learn about some ethical and legal challenges of working with human motion capture.

What are the musical instruments of the future? This anthology presents thirty papers selected from the fifteen-year-long history of the International Conference on New Interfaces for Musical Expression (NIME). Each of the papers is followed by commentaries written by the original authors and leading experts. The anthology is intended for newcomers who want to get an overview of recent advances in music technology. The historical traces, meta-discussions, and reflections will also interest experts. Thus, the book serves as a survey of influential past work and a starting point for new and exciting future developments.

This free online course is about music and body movement; from the pianist's sound-producing keyboard actions to clubbers' energetic dance moves. You will learn about the theoretical foundations for embodied music cognition and why body movement is crucial for how we experience the emotional moods in music. We will also explore different research, including advanced motion capture systems and sound analysis methods. You will be guided by a group of music researchers from the University of 探花精选, with musical examples from four professional musicians.
