Research collaboration

In terms of international co-authorship, the US is the University of ̽»¨¾«Ñ¡'s most important partner country. 

While not adequately reflected by this indicator, UiO US cooperation in the Humanities and Social Sciences is nevertheless prominent. Projects range from economics to philosophy, from classroom studies to museums, and from Scandinavian to African American and Asian studies. Partners are found at institutions such as Cornell, Harvard, Rutgers, University of Chicago, UC Berkeley and University of Texas at Austin.

Collaboration in education and student exchange

The UiO has a great number of bilateral agreements with US partner institutions, mostly linked to educational cooperation and student exchange. Some are linked to faculties and departments, others are institutional. Most of the agreements are limited to a relatively small number of student exchanges per year.

There are two renowned universities of specific strategic interest to the UiO, with several modalities

University of California

UC Berkeley

 serves as an incubator for new research and educational collaborations between the University of California, Berkeley and a consortium of Norwegian academic institutions; the universities in Agder, Bergen, ̽»¨¾«Ñ¡,  Trondheim (NTNU), Tromsø, and Ã…s (NMBU), the business schools in Bergen (NHH) and ̽»¨¾«Ñ¡ (BI), and the Research Council of Norway. 

Since 2013, co-PIs Ì½»¨¾«Ñ¡ and UC Berkeley have been granted 60 joint projects, undertaken at seven of the University's eight faculties: Theology, Law, Medicine, Humanities, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences and Education.

Many UiO students choose the University of California, Berkeley. The majority of them as fee paying Study Abroad students through agreements with UiO faculties or departments.

UC San Diego

The University of California, San Diego (USCD), SIMULA Research Laboratory (SIMULA)  and the Department of Informatics have a long-standing cooperation on PhD level. In 2015,  was initiated, funded by the Norwegian Ministry of Education and Research to promote multidisciplinary research in computational biology and medicine.

In 2016, UiO and UCSD entered into a strategic educational partnership leveraging established research collaborations to increase reciprocal student and faculty mobility.

University of California Education Abroad Program (UCEAP)

The strategic educational partnership with UCSD opened up for signing a student exchange agreement with all the University of California campuses, organized under the UCEAP umbrella. Through this agreement a larger number of students are offered the advantage of an exchange semester at one of the UC campuses, and the UiO welcomes a similar number of students from a leading academic institution every semester.

University of Minnesota

 Program promotes strategic cooperation between the University of Minnesota, the University of ̽»¨¾«Ñ¡ and the Norwegian University of Life Sciences. Although open to all research areas, the programme has a special focus on renewable energy, environment and sustainability, climate change, life sciences and biotechnology/production. Since 2012, 13 transatlantic projects with the University of ̽»¨¾«Ñ¡ have been funded.

Two student exchange agreements are established as part of this strategic partnership, one institutional and one with the Department of Biosciences.
