Academic Interests

I am centre leader for dScience – Centre for Computational and Data Science. I am also professor in computational mathematics/informatics. My main research has been within computational methods - machine learning, visualization and geometric modelling. I have worked on basic scientific problems as well as applied challenges in collaboration with companies and units in public sector.

Teaching

I have taught various courses on undergraduate and graduate level, mainly within mathematics (numerical methods and signal processing) and computer science (programming, digital representation and data structures). In addition, I have been involved as a lecturer in leadership development programs.

Employment history (short resymé)

Since January 2021 I have been leader of dScience - Centre for Computational and Dat Science - at the University of ̽��ѡ. Before that I was Dean at The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural sciences for eight years(2013-2020) and Head of the Department of Informatics for eight years (2005-2012). Earlier in my career I have had director positions at SINTEF, the Research Council of Norway and Simula Research Laboratory AS.

In this paper we discuss a framework for representation and maintenance of multi-resolution terrain and network data. We use a triangle-based representation of the terrain surface, and representations of curve networks (river systems, roads, railroad, etc. are integrated into the triangle-based representation. We introduce a data model for the representation and we discuss issues connected to the construction of the integrated representation of data. Several examples are provided.

Informatics (or ICT) is the science on how data systems are constructed and used, and informatics is today the science in the realm of all sciences with the largest impact on the development of the society. With emphasis on collaboration with industrial partners and important units in public sector this presentation is about the long term research challenges within informatics. It is all about shaping the workforce of tomorrow and performing high quality basic research for sustainable development.

Based on edge ordering strategies over triangulations, we introduce a hierarchical representation for triangle-based terrain surfaces. Edge-based data reduction strategies leading to hierarchical representations of triangle-based terrain surfaces opens for a more structured integration of polygonal data, e.g. river and road networks. In this paper we present various measures for selecting edges and we show a few examples where these measures are used for building hierarchical terrain models.
