Based on edge ordering strategies over triangulations, we introduce a
hierarchical representation for triangle-based terrain surfaces. Edge-based data reduction strategies leading to hierarchical representations of triangle-based terrain surfaces opens for a more structured integration of polygonal data, e.g. river and road networks. In this paper we present various measures for selecting edges and we show a few examples where these measures are used for building hierarchical terrain models.
