Established in 1947 during British Colonial Rule, Cyprus Airways, the now-struggling Cypriot airline, has served the island’s interests for more than half a century. Until 1974’s Turkish invasion Cyprus Airways was based in Nicosia International Airport (the only airport in Cyprus back then). After the invasion the company lost its base and part of its fleet was destroyed by the attackers but the Cypriot government was quick to build a new airport terminal in Larnaca and move its operations there. The airline managed to flourish during the 80’s and 90’s but in recent years it has been facing increasing financial problems.
